The Old Synagogue in Krakow is the oldest preserved synagogue in Poland. It was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style, and in 1570 it was rebuilt by Mateusz Gucci, who gave it a Renaissance form, while retaining its original layout and vaulting. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was expanded with additional rooms, creating a religious and administrative centre for the Jewish community in Kazimierz. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was restored several times. During World War II, it was taken over by the Germans, its furnishings were destroyed, and in 1944, the vault collapsed. After the war, between 1956 and 1959, the synagogue was rebuilt and a museum was established there. Currently, it collects artefacts related to the history and culture of Jews, especially those from Krakow, and conducts exhibition, educational and promotional activities.
